The Barrett's Directory was first established in 1878, and is a little bit like the census that we currently have. 1935 has the owner listed as P. Barrett and Co., but the printers and publishers are Mather Bros of Lune Street Preston.
The book is only local, being compiled for the Blackburn and surrounding districts, and in the case of Rishton, consists of an introduction to the town, an alphabetical street index and a business index. Blackburn's section contains much, much more than this of course!
The 1947 saw the tab system introduced in the book for the first time. This was a system that Barrett's were to use in every issue from this date and each tab contained a fast index to the sections.
Mather Bros (printers) Ltd at 31 Lune Street in Preston were the publishers and proprietors of the book in 1947.
The book was published every four years, and 1951 was the Twentieth edition.
In 1912, the book was 889 pages long, and cost 9 /-.
1935 was priced at 30/- (£1.50).
1947 was 32/- 6d (£1.62 1/2).
